What is Radon? Protecting Our Safety with Healthy Homes Radon

As an employee at Healthy Homes Radon, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our customers to address their concerns about Radon. Based in Minnetonka and serving Minnesota and Wisconsin, our mission is to ensure that homes and businesses in our community are safe from the dangers of Radon gas. Today, I’ll shed light on the critical question: What is Radon?

Understanding Radon: Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that is naturally present in the environment. It forms when uranium in soil, rock, or water breaks down and seeps into the air we breathe. While Radon exists in low levels outdoors, it becomes a concern when it accumulates indoors, reaching potentially harmful concentrations.

What is Radon? Understanding a Hidden Danger

Radon Levels and Health Risks: The Minnesota Department of Health and various other health organizations have extensively studied Radon and its effects. Radon exposure is a significant health risk, contributing to approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Shockingly, about 2,900 of these deaths occur among individuals who have never smoked. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, making it a crucial issue for indoor air quality.

Healthy Homes Radon: What is Radon?

Why Bloomington MN is at Risk: In Bloomington MN and beyond, the risk of Radon exposure is particularly concerning due to the geological composition of the region. The soil in this area contains higher levels of uranium, which increases the likelihood of Radon gas in Bloomington seeping into buildings. As a result, residents and businesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin must take proactive steps to test for and mitigate Radon to safeguard their health.

Why Should I worry about Radon Gas?

Frequently Asked Questions About Radon:

1. What are the symptoms of Radon exposure? Radon is a silent threat, as it does not cause immediate symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath. However, prolonged exposure to elevated Radon levels can lead to lung cancer, with symptoms often only appearing in advanced stages of the disease.

2. How can I test for Radon in my home? Testing for Radon is simple and affordable. Healthy Homes Radon offers Radon Test Kits that homeowners can use to measure Radon levels in their indoor air. These kits provide accurate results and are an essential tool for assessing Radon risk.

3. What is Radon Mitigation, and how does it work? Radon Mitigation involves reducing Radon levels in indoor spaces to minimize health risks. This process typically entails installing a Radon Mitigation System, which uses fans and vents to draw Radon gas from beneath the building and safely vent it outdoors.

WHAT IS RADON?

Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above, then into your home through cracks and other openings in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where radon levels can build up. Any home may have radon problems-  this means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. At Healthy Homes Radon, we help homeowners mitigate this danger and keep their home’s safe.

Any home may have radon problems. Radon gets in through:
  • Cracks in solid floors
  • Construction joints
  • Cracks in walls
  • The water supply
  • Gaps around service pipes
  • Cavities inside walls
  • Gaps in suspended floors

WHAT DO MY RADON TESTS MEAN?

In Minnesota, it is up to the homeowner to decide what amount of radon is acceptable for their home. To help with this decision, the table provides recommendations based on radon test results and the type of test used. These differ slightly from those of the EPA because they account for the weather extremes and the amount of radon typically found in this state. The advice also clarifies some common mistakes in how people interpret the EPA guidance.

These suggestions assume that the radon tests were conducted properly.

I had a wonderful experience working with Healthy Homes for my recent radon mitigation system installation. I researched and contacted many different installation companies and chose Health Homes. They were very responsive all along, from the beginning request for a bid to the final installation. They were able to get me on their schedule quickly, which I appreciated. On the day of installation, they were very easy to work with, did a great job on the installation, and they had my house sparkling clean in all areas they entered to do their work. My after-installation radon test came back extremely low, and I didn't have to pay until the results came back with the below-guaranteed level. I am grateful to feel so much safer in my home, and I feel great knowing I have warranty protection from a great company.

As a realtor, having great partners that I can rely on is paramount. In this particular case, Healthy Homes REALLY came through for my clients. The week my clients were meant to close, the underwriter said that the radon system would need to be installed prior to close rather than after closing which was what was originally negotiated. Luckily, Healthy Homes was able to make arrangements to squeeze us in on a holiday week in order to close on time. Not only did they make time for my clients, they were also extremely quick to communicate and on the day of installation, they worked with my buyer to choose the best location for installation based on what my clients wanted. Thanks to them, I’ve got happy, buyers, AND a safer home for them to move into!
